Almost
Last night was a full moon.
Light crawled across the floor
as if it was searching for something.
The closet wasn’t as safe as it used to be.
The crack in the door felt wider.
The shadows - thinner.
I stood still.
Like always.
But the moonlight
almost touched me.
The little human opened his eyes.
It only takes a second to see.
I froze.
If he had looked directly into the corner -
maybe he would have seen
not eyes,
not a face,
just a shape.
And maybe he would have understood
he was never alone.
But he turned to the other side.
The moon moved on.
In the morning, the socks were still mismatched.
But he left anyway.
And I remained.
This time -
a little less hidden.
